Budhanilkantha: The Sacred Abode of the Sleeping Vishnu
Located about 10 kilometers north of Kathmandu, Budhanilkantha is one of Nepal’s most sacred and visually captivating Hindu pilgrimage sites. The centerpiece of this holy place is the remarkable Sleeping Vishnu statue, also called Jal Narayan, which rests in the middle of a pond at the foot of the Shivapuri Hills. Carved from a single block of black basalt, the statue depicts Lord Vishnu lying peacefully on the coils of the cosmic serpent, Shesh Nag, surrounded by calm waters that symbolize the cosmic ocean. Every morning, priests perform traditional rituals as devotees gather to offer prayers, flowers, and butter lamps, creating a tranquil yet deeply sacred atmosphere. The site becomes especially lively during the Haribodhini Ekadashi festival in November, marking Lord Vishnu’s awakening after four months of cosmic sleep. Surrounded by green hills and cool breezes, Budhanilkantha offers a refreshing escape from the city’s hustle while providing a profound glimpse into Nepal’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
